01 โ€” Overview

A digital notebook for crochet makers

Yarncrafted began as a passion project to create a dedicated crochet community and make it easier for makers to organize their projects in one place.

The product was built to solve the challenge of creating, publishing, testing, and following crochet patterns without relying on disconnected paper notes, spreadsheets, or separate tools.

The Challenge

Crochet projects involve a lot to keep track of.

Crochet makers often use paper notebooks, bookmarks, screenshots, and notes to manage patterns and project progress. Those systems work, but they are difficult to search, update, and share with others.

Core product question

How can a digital experience make crochet organization feel as easy and personal as a maker's physical notebook?

02 โ€” Product Process

From hobby to useful product

The platform evolved through experimentation, community feedback, feature development, and ongoing refinement.

01

Discover

Identified the need for one organized place to manage crochet patterns, notes, and project details.

02

Build

Developed core tools including pattern organization, a row counter, and a pattern-building workflow.

03

Test

Gathered user feedback to understand where the experience could be clearer and easier to use.

04

Iterate

Refined navigation, access to tools, and content structure as the community and product grew.

03 โ€” Discovery

Understanding Scope

Crochet started as a personal hobby during the pandemic, but it quickly revealed a need for better ways to record project information and pattern steps.

The first goal was simple: create an all-in-one digital crochet notebook that makers could return to throughout each project.

05 โ€” Feature Focus

Narrowing Focus

As the platform gained users, the product direction shifted toward the tools people needed most while actively working on crochet projects.

Features such as the row counter and pattern builder helped replace a physical notebook with a more flexible, searchable, and reusable workflow.

Product takeaway

Focused tools create more value than a broad set of disconnected features.

06 โ€” Product Strategy

Being Realistic

The product needed to work as more than a personal notebook. It needed a sustainable structure that could support both useful tools and community growth.

Educational blog content could attract organic traffic, while the pattern tools gave visitors a practical reason to return and engage with the product.

07 โ€” Usability

Increasing Users

After launching in 2022, the site was functional, but user testing showed opportunities to make the platform more intuitive and easier to navigate.

Feedback informed changes to feature access, navigation patterns, and the overall flow between project tools.

  • โœ“Easier access to pattern tools
  • โœ“Clearer navigation paths
  • โœ“Better response to user feedback

08 โ€” Iteration

Continuing Iterations

Yarncrafted continued to evolve from its original personal-use concept into a more complete toolkit for crochet makers.

Each iteration introduced clearer feature access, more useful tools, and a stronger content structure designed to support long-term community engagement.

09 โ€” Takeaways

Moving Forward

The platform created a strong foundation, with clear opportunities to make the product even more useful for new and returning makers.

01

User Onboarding

Add more A/B testing and onboarding guidance so new users immediately understand how the tools work.

02

Further Customization

Expand the toolkit with additional customization options that support different crochet workflows.

03

Feedback Loops

Continue collecting user feedback and testing improvements directly with members of the crochet community.
